Speedway Events: Fast, Furious and Fun

by Cindy Paul on September 1, 2009

Speedway events naturally center around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway races that made the city world-famous and gave it its name. Contrary to what die-hard race fans may think, however, there is life outside of the track, and plenty of it goes on in and around Speedway. You just have to hunt a bit.

Of course it doesn’t hurt to be a small, independent suburb all but surrounded by its host city, Indianapolis. A long list of events can be compiled just out of Indy alone, but many other cities in Indiana within just a few miles of Speedway offer festivals, fairs, attractions and greater Indianapolis events as well.

Feel the squeal in this exciting video of the 2008 Red Bull MotoGP motorcycle races at the Brickyard.

Then there are the great Speedway bars and Speedway restaurants to consider, too. At places like the Union Jack Pub, Speedway residents and visitors can find ongoing, fun events that make up the bulk of Speedway’s nightlife.

Below is the list of Speedway events that Fun City Finder compiled. We hope it gives you a good start on your own, custom-made list.

Speedway Events

500 Festival Breakfast at the Brickyard – Wherein the Indy 500 Queen is crowned, guests get to take a lap in their own cars around the famous oval track, and everybody has breakfast. This Indy 500-related Speedway event usually happens about two weeks before the race.
500 Festival Memorial Service – The real meaning of Memorial Day is never lost on Hoosiers, not even in the midst of the Indy 500 madness. This festival celebrates the success of the big race and its valiant drivers and stages a remarkable tribute to those heroes who gave their lives for their country.
Allstate 400 at the Brickyard – This is  NASCAR’s answer to auto racers’ never-ending quest for demon speed. It takes place every July at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track.
Indianapolis 500 Festival – Convening in next-door Indianapolis’ downtown sector, this most-attended Indianapolis event usurps the entire month of May.
Indianapolis 500 Festival Community Day – Put on by American Family Insurance, this popular day is set aside for the greater Indianapolis community and visitors from around the world to have their turn driving around the legendary IMS track, where professional drivers reach velocities of over 200 mph. Where else can you do that without getting a ticket? Lots of other people-oriented activities, too.
Indianapolis 500-mile race – The granddaddy of them all, and the most famous auto racing event in the entire world, the Indy 500 takes over Speedway every Memorial Day weekend.
Miller Lite Carb Day – A day at the races in which fans can see their favorite drivers practicing and qualifying and listen to music on while they slowly empty the contents of their picnics on the stands.
Red Bull MotoGP – World-class premier motorcycle racing at its speediest, on the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, during the beautiful Fall season in the Circle City.
Victory Circle Celebration – The congratulatory party at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, in which the winner receives a trophy, a wreath and a traditional sip of milk, and then the real party begins.
